Valentin Dmitrievich Korotkov's "Woman of Tuva" (1970) marks a pivotal moment in Soviet art, exemplifying the Severe Style that emerged after Stalin's death in the 1950s. This painting not only showcases Korotkov's artistic evolution but also captures a slice of Tuvan culture during a time of significant social upheaval.
The composition features a young Tuvan woman who embodies her cultural legacy, with her strong face rendered in bold lines and shadows. This depiction reflects both the Severe Style's unadorned approach and the resilience of her people. The background merges Cubist influences with Severe Style elements, depicting the Tuvan landscape and traditional yurts as simplified geometric shapes. Korotkov’s artistic choice illustrates his visit to Tuva in the early 1960s, where he described the landscape as “the eternity of the universe.” This expansive portrayal not only aligns with the revival of Cubist influences in Soviet art after the decline of Socialist Realism but also adheres to the Severe Style's penchant for stark, unembellished depictions of Soviet life.

Korotkov’s choice of colours moves away from the brighter, idealised palettes of the past, aiming instead for a more authentic representation of the Tuvan landscape. The earthy tones reflect the harsh realities faced by the indigenous Tuvans, a Turkic people who, after the Soviet Union annexed Tuva in 1944, were forced into herding collectives. This historical context is crucial for understanding the painting, as it encapsulates the tension between the cultural heritage of the Tuvan people and the social changes imposed by Soviet policies.
Valentin Dmitrievich Korotkov was a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR. His work gained recognition through a solo exhibition held in 2017 at the Kemerovo Regional Museum of Fine Arts (KOMIA) in Siberia. A book dedicated to his work was published in 2019, and his paintings are exhibited in museums across Russia and held in private collections throughout Central Asia.
