Elena Mikhailovna Kurmanaevskaya's “Socialism is a Society of Social Optimism” (1980s) is a remarkable piece in Soviet poster art, preserved as both an original oil on card drawing and the final printed silkscreen poster. This complete set is a rarity, as Soviet protocol usually required the destruction of preliminary sketches once a design was approved. Created in the late Soviet era for Agitplakat Don, the poster embodies generational continuity and reflects the stylistic shift from classical Socialist Realism to the evolving aesthetics of the pre-perestroika period.
The central figures—a war veteran adorned with military medals and a young pioneer holding a red flag inscribed with “МИР” (Peace)—stand against a radiant, golden sunburst, symbolising the link between revolutionary sacrifice and future promise. The composition’s diagonal movement emphasises this optimism, while the reference to a Central Committee decree marking the October Revolution underscores its alignment with Party ideology.

The restrained colour scheme of three main hues—golden yellow, coral red, and white—demonstrates both an economic approach to printing and a nod to modernist design. Kurmanaevskaya’s intricate sunburst pattern, rendered with precise linework, evokes a secularised version of religious iconography, casting the figures in an aura of reverence and hope.
Elena Mikhailovna Kurmanaevskaya, born in 1947 in Rostov-on-Don, emerged as a significant figure in late Soviet graphic design through her work with state publishing houses including Agitplakat Don. Her artistic education at both the M.B. Grekov Rostov Art School and the prestigious V.I. Surikov Moscow State Academic Art Institute provided technical foundations for her distinctive style. As a member of the Union of Artists of Russia and Professor at the South Russian Institute of Humanities, she gained recognition through over 170 international exhibitions and received the title of Honoured Artist of Russia in 2008.
