"Blue Roads of the Motherland" (1979) by Yuri and Irina Gretsky demonstrates the artists' pioneering approach to 'Transmism', their philosophical-artistic movement that explores transcendental movement through industrial motifs. Created during an era of increased emphasis on Soviet maritime power, this watercolor conveys both the practical reality of shipbuilding and its symbolic resonance in the national consciousness.
The composition centres dramatically on a massive ship's hull, suspended in dry dock, its immense red-brown form cutting a bold diagonal across the picture plane. This dominant structure is supported by an intricate network of scaffolding and maintenance frameworks, creating a precise geometric undergirding. The artists' masterful handling of watercolour, with warm russet tones transitioning subtly from deep reds to softer browns, creates a profound sense of volume and material presence. The atmospheric quality of the sky, rendered in muted yellows and greys, establishes a distinctive spatial relationship that draws the eye between earth and heaven, whilst the small figures of workers below emphasise the monumental scale of the industrial labour.

The painting's conceptual power lies in its transformation of an ordinary shipyard scene into a meditation on transcendence. The suspended vessel becomes a symbol of passage between material and spiritual realms, consistent with the artists' philosophical framework of Transmism. This symbolic resonance is emphasised through the careful orchestration of geometric elements, where industrial architecture serves as a bridge between earthly labour and celestial aspiration. The distant horizon contextualises the scene within a broader industrial landscape whilst simultaneously suggesting infinite possibility, creating a tension between immediate physical reality and metaphysical potential.
Yuri and Irina Gretsky (both born 1944) represent a unique phenomenon in contemporary Soviet art through their complete artistic partnership. As members of the Union of Artists of the USSR and Honoured Artists of the Russian Federation, they have consistently co-created and co-signed their works as a single creative entity. Their development of 'geometric symbolism' combines influences from Cubism, Fauvism, and Suprematism, whilst maintaining a distinctly Russian character. Their work is held in the collections of the Russian Ministry of Culture and various state museums in Moscow and St. Petersburg, with their recent exhibition "In the Space of the City" (2017) showcasing their continued influence on contemporary Russian art.
