"The Temptation of St. Anthony II" (1967) by Viktor Dmitrievich Pivovarov aligns with the nonconformist movement's rejection of state-imposed artistic doctrine. The monotype's central theme is the tension between internal conflict and transcendence, conveyed through surreal and fragmented visual language.
The composition is dominated by two primary elements: a bird-like creature with mechanical features on the left, and a haunting double perspective of a human face on the right. Horizontal lines traverse the image, dividing the space into segments that suggest barriers between physical and spiritual realms. The bird-creature, rendered in precise, mechanical lines, contrasts with the human face, which is depicted with bold, emotional brushstrokes. This juxtaposition creates a sense of dynamic tension, while the floating vessel-like shapes and ambiguous symbols add a dreamlike quality of the scene.

Pivovarov employs abstraction and surrealism to explore St. Anthony's trials as a fragmented but deeply personal struggle. But, the work's strength lies in its interplay between clarity and ambiguity. The bird-like figure evokes mechanical rigidity, while the human face, with its exaggerated features, suggests vulnerability and introspection. The parallel horizontal lines imply communication or conflict, emphasising the dualities of temptation and transcendence. The stark contrasts between deep blacks and lighter areas mirror the psychological struggle. This balance between defined forms and shadowy uncertainty captures the essence of spiritual conflict.
Viktor Dmitrievich Pivovarov (b. 1937) trained at the Moscow Art and Industrial School and the Moscow Printing Institute, specialising in graphic arts. His early works challenged Soviet conventions, paving the way for his recognition as a leading figure in the nonconformist art movement. Notable exhibitions include his 1984 debut in Prague and the 1993 "Metampsychosis" exhibition at L-Gallery. Pivovarov's works are held in the collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, and the Ludwig Forum Museum in Aachen.
