Dimitar Tasev's "The Taming of the Shrew" (1970s) represents a pivotal moment in Bulgarian theatrical poster design, created for the National Youth Theatre during a period of significant cultural transformation. This silkscreen poster emerged when state-supported theatres were actively reinterpreting Western classical works through a contemporary socialist lens. The work demonstrates the innovative fusion of Pop Art aesthetics with traditional theatrical advertising that characterised Eastern European poster art of the era, whilst engaging with the complex gender politics inherent in Shakespeare's controversial comedy.
The composition is anchored by a striking female face centred against a salmon-pink background, with the play's title boldly rendered in Cyrillic typography above. The focal point—a stylised golden muzzle obscuring the lower portion of the woman's face—serves as a powerful visual metaphor for the play's themes of patriarchal control. The subject's enlarged eyes, emphasised by dramatic black lashes, confront the viewer directly, creating an unsettling tension between constraint and defiance. This stark arrangement of elements demonstrates Tasev's masterful understanding of visual hierarchy and symbolic representation.

The poster employs a deliberately restricted colour palette of black, salmon-pink, cream, and golden yellow, showcasing the technical possibilities of silkscreen printing through clean lines and solid colour blocks. This approach marks a significant departure from socialist realist traditions, embracing modernist design principles while maintaining the graphic impact necessary for theatrical advertising. The stark simplicity of the execution, with its Pop Art sensibilities, reflects the period's growing acceptance of Western artistic influences within Eastern European design.
Dimitar Tasev (b. 1937) made significant contributions to the artistic theatrical poster genre since the mid-1960s. His distinctive approach blends vibrant, fragmented imagery inspired by Pop Art sensibilities and folk iconography, earning him recognition through exhibitions across Europe, the United States, and the Middle East. As both a practitioner and educator, holding positions as Associate Professor from 1983 and Professor from 1993 at the National Academy of Arts, Tasev has shaped generations of Bulgarian designers through his unique combination of academic rigour and folkloric wisdom. His works, including this poster, are held in collections such as the poster museums in Warsaw and Los Angeles.
