Horst Naumann’s "Tierpark Berlin" (1963) captures a pivotal moment in Cold War Germany, when Berlin's division spurred the creation of parallel cultural institutions on either side of the Wall. Conceived as a response to East Germans' lack of access to West Berlin's Zoological Gardens, the Tierpark was founded on the grounds of Friedrichsfelde Palace as a symbol of East German cultural ambition. Commissioned during a period of major expansion, the poster reflects the GDR's drive to establish cultural parity with the West. The timing is notable, coinciding with the zoo’s expanding collection of over 120 species, including Siberian tigers and Asian elephants.
The composition exemplifies masterful propaganda design through its striking simplicity. A snarling black panther commands the visual space, with fierce yellow eyes and exposed fangs creating an immediate emotional impact. This arrangement reflects both the modernist design principles of the era and the GDR's aspirations to project cultural sophistication through its institutions. The panther serves as both a literal representation of the zoo's big cat collection and a metaphor for East German strength and resolve.

The poster’s technical execution showcases a sophisticated approach to commercial art, with a limited yet powerful color palette. Minimalist white typography anchors the lower portion, while a gradient green background adds depth without distraction. The sharp contrast between the black panther and the luminous green backdrop creates a dramatic effect, and the precise rendering of the animal’s features highlights advanced airbrush technique. This modernist style marked a departure from socialist realist aesthetics, favoring emotional impact through simplified forms and bold contrasts.
Horst Naumann (1908-1990) was a prominent member of the Association of Visual Artists in Dresden and a leading figure in East German commercial art. Trained under Otto Dix at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts, he brought notable technical skill to his commercial works. His designs are held in prestigious collections, including the German Historical Museum Foundation and the Poster OST Foundation in Berlin. This poster exemplifies his talent for merging artistic quality with commercial goals, a skill that earned him accolades like the GDR’s Patriotic Order of Merit in 1978.
