Vasily Ivanovich Khvorost’s “First Steps in Space” (1975) commemorates one of humanity’s landmark achievements—the first spacewalk, performed by Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov in 1965. Created a decade after Leonov’s historic feat, this lithograph was produced during Khvorost’s tenure as art editor at *Luch* publishing house. The work conveys themes of technological advancement, optimism and the exploration of new worlds, set against a backdrop of Cold War competition.
The composition centres on Leonov’s figure, floating freely in space with his arms outstretched against a dark expanse. The curved horizon of Earth below provides a sense of depth and perspective, while the spacecraft and scattered stars frame the scene, enhancing its vastness. The “CCCP” insignia on Leonov’s helmet firmly situates this achievement within the Soviet context, distinguishing it from American space efforts. Tethered by only a single cord, Leonov’s vulnerable position against the boundless cosmos captures the solitude and bravery of a lone figure venturing into the distant unknown.

Khvorost’s use of a restrained colour palette, with deep blues and blacks for the void of space and stark white highlights on the spacesuit and Earth’s horizon, creates a powerful contrast that emphasises Leonov’s isolation. This lithographic technique exemplifies Khvorost’s skill in what critic L.V. Tverskaya termed the “plasticity of poetic black and white” imagery. Departing from the bold colours typical of Soviet propaganda, Khvorost’s nuanced approach conveys a more reflective tone, underscoring the profound significance of Leonov’s achievement in human history.
As a distinguished member of both the Union of Artists of the USSR and the Union of Journalists, Khvorost brought significant artistic credentials to this historical subject matter. His formal training at the Ivan Fedorov Lviv Printing Institute under V.S. Ovchinnikov informed his technical mastery, while his position at "Luch" publishing house provided the platform for creating works of historical significance. This piece exemplifies why his work now resides in 28 museums worldwide and contributed to his recognition as an Honoured Worker of Culture of Ukraine in 2008.
